Some words you might see. An "AI model" is just the name for the smart program you are talking to, like different brands of cars. "Free version" means the company lets you use the basics without paying. You do not need to understand how it works inside, any more than you need to know how a telephone works to make a call.
What you will learn
An AI helper is a website or app you can talk to in plain words. You type a question, and it types back an answer. There are a few well-known ones, and each has a free version that is plenty for learning. ChatGPT, by OpenAI, is the most popular one. It is easy to talk to, and there are more beginner guides for it than anything else. Claude, by Anthropic, is very good at explaining things in clear, simple language. Gemini, by Google, is a natural pick if you already use Gmail or Google. Copilot, by Microsoft, is built into Windows computers and the Edge browser. Our suggestion: start with the free version of ChatGPT, since it is the most popular and the easiest to find help for. If you already use Google for everything, the free version of Gemini is just as good a start. You only need one. You can try another later.
A "prompt" is simply the message you type to the AI, the way you would ask a person a question. To copy the example: press and hold the text until you see Copy, then tap Copy. Next, tap the writing box on the AI's website, press and hold, and tap Paste. Then tap the send arrow. If nothing happens, check you are connected to the internet by looking for the Wi-Fi fan symbol at the top of your screen.
Try this in practice
Pick one helper from the list below. Go to its website on your phone or computer. For ChatGPT, that is chatgpt.com. Make a free account with your email address. This is normal and safe on these well-known sites. Copy the hello message from the blue box, paste it into the writing box, and press send. Read the answer and notice what it offers to help with.
A "limit" just means the free version allows a certain number of chats per day. When you reach it, the helper will ask you to come back tomorrow. Also remember: trustworthy companies never need your bank password to let you try their free AI.
What to watch for
Free versions let you chat a certain amount each day, then ask you to wait until tomorrow. That is normal and nothing is broken. You never need a credit card to start learning. If any site demands payment before you have tried anything, close it and use one of the well-known helpers from this lesson instead. And never type passwords, bank details, or account numbers into any AI chat.
